Business Math Boot Camp Level III Workshop

Dare to test your retail math skills?

So, did you score a 5 or 6 on the Level II test?  Are you ready for some tougher Business Management Questions?

To truly stand out from your competition in business analysis, you must demonstrate mastery of the interrelationships between business metrics.  The stakes are high.  Top notch analysis can unlock business potential that previously lay buried in a sea of complex data.  Best-in-class analytics are transforming the way companies compete for their customers’ share of mind and business.  Are you at the top of your industry?

Below are three Level III Business Management Questions (BMQs™) reflective of everyday issues in the CPG/FMCG industry.  Work on your own to answer as many questions as you can in 10 minutes.  To obtain a true reading of your math knowledge, we encourage you to try this exercise without aids such as formula sheets, business calculators, spreadsheets with stored formulas, or coworkers.

Click on “Submit Quiz” to receive your score - must enter your email address or we will not know where to send your score.  (Please note: this is a temporary webpage until the web designer gurus can complete the "real" pages.  Because of the temporary site, you will receive your results via email - therefore an email address is required until this is fixed).

LEVEL III Business Management Questions:

Question 1: An endcap contains red and white wine.  Red has triple the shelf space of white, yet red still turns twice as fast.  Red generates 10 times the profits of white.  To equalize turns between red and white wine, what percentage of the space should be allocated to red?
Question 2: During your next sale your average inventory will be 20% higher and your gross margin will drop from 25% to 15%.  To maintain the same GMROII, what percent increase in dollar sales must you have?
Question 3: The Hairy Potter is a retail chain with 100 stores.  Sometimes individual stores fail to execute promotions.  The everyday retail price for magic wands is $3.49, with chainwide average weekly sales of 200 units.  The Hairy Potter has a one-week promotion at a price of $1.99 and sells 600 units for a total of $1,314.  In stores that executed the promotion, all magic wands were sold at $1.99 and the sales rate was higher than normal.  In stores that failed to execute the promotion, all magic wands were sold at the regular price of $3.49 and wands sold at the normal sales rate.  How many stores actually executed the promotion?
